Health and Safety
There are only a few areas in South Africa that are Malaria-risk areas, The Kruger National Park, Northern KwaZulu Natal and Zululand (situated on the southern Mozambique border).
Precautions to follow if you are travelling to a Malaria area:
- Purchasing insect repellent and apply to any exposed skin
- We recommend that you cover up if you are outside at night, with long sleeve tops and trousers.
- Malaria medication can be recommended for the area you are travelling to. Ensure to take the medication and to complete the course.
- Many establishments are equipped with mosquito nets, make use of these.
The sun is fierce in South Africa so it is important to apply generous amounts of sun cream and protective wear. Remember to reapply regularly and stay hydrated.
Exploring tidal pools and rocky coastline can leave your feet cut and scraped. Pack in a pair of reef shoes for good measure .
Public beaches have lifeguards that are on duty during the day. Pay attention to instructions and warnings issued. The most dangerous is the hidden rip tide. Keep an eye open for these and avoid entering the ocean if there is a rip tide present, a relaxing swim in the ocean can quickly turn into a very serious situation.
It is important to respect the ocean and the rules and regulations are enforced to ensure everyone’s safety. Swimming in a group is advised, safety in numbers!
The ocean is home to wildlife some of which can be dangerous like bluebottles, sea urchins, jellyfish and perhaps an occasional shark. Keep a safe distance and respect that you are visiting in their home. Allow nature to run its course.
