Health and Safety
There are only a few areas in South Africa that are Malaria-risk areas, The Kruger National Park, Northern KwaZulu Natal and Zululand (situated on the southern Mozambique boarder).
Precautions to follow if you are travelling to a Malaria area:
- Purchasing insect repellent and apply to any exposed skin
- We recommend that you cover up if you are outside at night, long sleeve tops and trousers.
- Malaria medication can be recommended for the area you are travelling to. Ensure to take the medication and to complete the course.
- Many establishments are equipped with mosquito nets, make use of these.
The idyllic setting of the countryside does come with some safety tips to make sure your experience is smooth sailing.
It is important to note that while out on a walk or a hike you could encounter wildlife, these are wild animals and potentially dangerous. Ensure you keep a safe distance and be respectful of their space. If hiking or moving through rocky areas be on high alert for creepy crawlies and venomous snakes. Keep your eyes peeled and always watch where you are walking.
Be mindful of your surroundings, it is easy to become disorientated and possibly getting lost. If you are off on a walk or a hike, inform others and make sure you pack enough water and a snack or two. It is recommended that you do not go alone.
A good thing to remember is to respect nature and wildlife and it will respect you in return, you are a visitor in their home.
